Recognition of driving licences issued in other EU countries in exchange for a non-EU driving licence
Current driving licences issued by another Member State of the European Union or European Economic Area by conversion of a licence issued by a non-EU country:
• are considered to be full EU licences if Italy has entered into mutual agreements on the conversion of driving licences with the non-EU country that issued the original licence;
• are considered to be licences issued by non-EU or non-EEA countries if Italy has not entered into mutual agreements on the conversion of driving licences with the third country which issued the original licence or if that agreement has expired. Therefore, in the latter case, you can drive in Italy provided that you are not officially resident in Italy or that you have been resident for less than a year. After 1 year from the date on which you took up official residence in Italy, you will have to obtain an Italian licence by taking the required qualification tests (theory and practical examination) to be able to drive vehicles in Italy.
